My name is Mary Harbison. I have
been employed in MSAD #70 since July, 1999. My first position in
the district was as Assistant Principal at Mill Pond School. I held
that position for twelve years along with a number of other responsibilities
including 504 Coordinator, Title IX Coordinator, and Athletic Administrator.
I am honored to be serving as the principal of Hodgdon High School.
I am originally from Bradford, Massachusetts
but relocated to Houlton in the Fall of 1981. I received my Bachelor's
Degree in Elementary Education with a concentration in Special Education
from Fitchburg State College. I completed my Masters Degree program
from Bridgewater State College with a concentration in School Administration.
In addition to working in school systems for twenty-nine years, I have
also spent a few years as an administrator in a residential program for
children and adults with disabilities and as a licensed social worker.
I am pleased to join the high school community.
It has been great fun for me to see how students I had at Mill Pond School
several years ago have grown and matured since coming to the high school.
I have also enjoyed meeting many new students who have come to our high
school in recent years.
I am impressed with the quality of instruction
being offered to our students by Hodgdon High School teachers. In
addition to traditional class offerings, there are many other academic
opportunities for students at Hodgdon High School. Students may participate
in Maine's aspiration plan for early college. Through this opportunity,
the state pays half of the tuition and the university system picks up the
other half of the cost for a class. Students pay a technology fee
and cover the cost of the text books for the class. Students are
also able to take on-line accredited high school classes through Virtual
High School (VHS). These classes include special interest classes
that either do not fit into a student's typical schedule or are not offered
within our school. Advanced Placement classes are another option
for students wishing to accelerate their learning. Most of these
classes are offered within the high school but a few are offered on line.
These classes allow students to gain college credit once the class is passed
with a score of 3, 4, or 5.
We are fortunate to have an after school
program for all students who need extra homework help or reteaching in
a particular skill. This program is offered Monday through Thursday
from 2:30 to 4:00. A Math Interventionist is available to assist
students with mathematics and also to assist with other classes where mathematics
is used, such as many of the sciences. A Literacy Interventionist
is also available to assist students not only with English but also with
all subjects in relation to writing across the curriculum. The Interventionists
are available during regular school hours.
I invite you to stop in to visit Hodgdon
High School and to meet our staff. Please call 532-2413 to set up
an appointment.
